Chiral Anomaly and Index Theorem on a finite lattice
Abstract: The chiral anomaly for lattice Dirac operator $ D $ on a finite lattice is discussed. The condition for $ D $ to reproduce correct chiral anomaly at each site of a finite lattice for smooth background gauge fields is that the Dirac operator possesses exact zero modes satisfying the Atiyah-Singer index theorem. A general formula for the anomaly function on a finite lattice is derived. The topological characteristics of $ D $ and the general index theorem are discussed.
