Abelianization of SU(2) gauge theory with gauge invariant dynamical variables

Abstract: It is shown that SU(2) gauge theory coupled to adjoint Higgs can be explicitly re-written in terms of gauge invariant dynamical variables with a novel U(1) gauge invriance. In this abelianised version, magnetic monopoles have natural origin and occur in the partition function as Dirac monopoles. After regularisation on lattice, the theory corresponds to compact lattice U(1) gauge theory with additional "electric" and "magnetic" charge interactions which reflect the initial non-abelian nature of the theory. The effect of theta term and the corresponding SU(N) results will be summarised.
