Center Symmetry, Instantons and Confinement

Abstract: The Z(N) center symmetry of continuum Yang Mills theory at non-zero temperature and the associated Polyakov loop order parameter lie at the heart of confinement. As conventionally formulated, the dilute instanton gas and instanton liquids do not incorporate center symmetry, yielding a Polyakov loop that decays exponentially in inverse temperature and no confinement. This work explores several aspects of including center symmetry in instanton models and possible relations between instantons and center vortices on the lattice.
