Real-time dynamics in the 1+1 D abelian Higgs model with fermions

Abstract: The 1+1 D abelian Higgs model with fermions is a toy model for the theory of electroweak baryogenesis. We study the model with axially coupled fermions numerically in real-time, using a spacetime lattice. The dynamics is approximated by treating the inhomogeneous Bose fields classically, which is justified in a large $N_f$ approximation. The back reaction of the fermions on the Bose fields is calculated using a mode function expansion. It is known that such approximations, if limited to homogeneous Bose fields, do not show thermalization behavior. Allowing for inhomogenous Bose fields we find that the system equilibrates locally in time and allows for an approximate description in terms of quasi-equilibrium (time dependent) fermion distribution functions.
