The Maximum Abelian Gauge vs. the Maximum Center Gauge
Abstract: We compute the heavy quark potential in the positive plaquette model of SU(2), using monopoles obtained from the maximum abelian gauge and vortices obtained from the maximum center gauge. Both produce almost perfectly linear potentials with a much smaller noise level than the full SU(2) potential. The correct string tension is obtained in both cases. We go on to study the correlations between vortices and the magnetic current of monopoles. Comparison is also made to the method of calculating with vortices which uses no gauge-fixing.
