Prospects of "topologically unquenched QCD" from a study of the analogous approximation to the functional determinant in the massive Schwinger model

Abstract: I give an outline of my recent proposal (PRD 59 (99), 094501) for simulating an improvement on quenched QCD with dynamical fermions which interact with the gluon configuration only via the topological index of the latter, which would drastically reduce the number of determinant ratios to be calculated but at the price of assigning each configuration a topological index. I discuss the prospects of this approximation -- both in terms of its intrinsic capabilites and the CPU-power needed -- as estimated from a study of the analogous truncation of the functional determinant in the massive $N_f$-flavour Schwinger model.
